Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

 To lecture undergraduate and honours modules in Physics. Carry out research in one of the Departmental research focus areas: Astrophysics/Space Science/Astronomy

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 TEACHING

  • Facilitate and administer the learning process for students in physics modules presented by the North West University at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
  • Review and design academic curricula.

 RESEARCH

  • Carry out research and supervise postgraduate students.
  • Preference will be given to Stellar Astrophysics/Exo-Planet Research.

 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Contribute to community engagement and be involved in the departmental administrative functions

Minimum requirements

  • A doctoral degree (NQF level 10) in Materials/ Space Science & Astrophysics.
  • A minimum of three (3) year teaching experience

ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

  •  At least 3 publications in peer reviewed with at least 1 as first author.
  • Participation in local or international conferences. 
  • Must be registered with South African Institute of Physics (SAIP).

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  •  Effective lecturing of undergraduate and post-graduate physics theory courses at university level. 
  • The ability to carefully analyse information and use logic to address issues and problems at work.
  • Ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines. 
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Preferably the knowledge to use a telescope.
  • Good programming skills.

 KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • The ability to adhere to rules and strictly follow work regulations.
  • The ability to be cooperative with others, display a good-natured attitude, and encourage people to work together.
  • The ability to be sensitive and understanding to the needs and feelings of others.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
