This position’s main purpose is to conduct research and publish the results thereof; supervise and deliver higher degree students; mentor young researchers linked to the research entity and perform associated administrative work.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research  
  • Conduct research and publish in accredited journals
Professional Development
  • Consolidate research in the field of social sciences
  •  Engage and promote knowledge production and sharing in the social sciences
  • Provide intellectual leadership within the Population and Health research entity
  • Organise and attend workshops seminars and any relevant capacity building opportunities.
Community Engagement
·        Initiate and actively participate in community engagement projects.
Engage, Collaborate with strategic higher education partners
 
·        Establish and build on current networks of Higher Education expertise at faculty, institutional, national and international level.
·        Establish and build HE partnership and collaborations.
Ad hoc
·        Capacity building and mentorship of novice researchers.
 

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervision of Masters and Doctoral postgraduate research projects.
  • Conduct solo and collaborative project research
  • Developing and conducting capacity building research training for research entity members and post graduate students
  • Apply for internal and external research funding
  • Supervise and build capacity of post-doctoral fellows.
  • Be involved in community engagement projects

Minimum requirements

Qualifications:
  •  Post graduate NQF Level 10 in higher education is essential.
  • PhD NQF Level 10 in the Social Sciences, preferably with interest in Development Studies, Sociology or Population Studies.
  • Membership in Locally and internationally recognised associations such as Population Association of Southern Africa (PASA), Sociological Association of South Africa (SASA) etc is desirable.

Experience:
  • 5-8 years relevant work experience in the social sciences is essential.
  • 5-8 years elevant and substantive research outputs is essential.
  • 5-8 years successful postgraduate supervision is essential.
  • 3-5 years obtaining research grants is desirable

  • Effective time-management skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven
  • Ability to write competitive research proposals and reports
  • Good planning and organising skills

  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU
  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group

  • A high level of professional and ethical conduct

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
