NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: P001251 VACANCY: GENERAL WORKER PEROMNES GRADE: P17 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To undertake and fulfill duties of a General Worker in the Botanical Garden in the Department of Botany at the Potchefstroom Campus.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintenance of a section of the Botanical Garden

·        Trimming, pruning and removal of excess growth and vegetation.

·        Weeding of invasive and exotic species from the greenhouses and propagation area.

·        Regular watering of the vegetable section, greenhouses and propagation area.

·        Fertilization of plants in the vegetable garden, greenhouses and propagation area.

·        Monitoring of plants for pests and diseases.

·        Mulching of vegetable beds.

·        Making of cuttings and sowing of seed.

·        Planting of new plants and replacement of dead plants.

·        Transplanting potted plants.

·        Cleaning of paved areas in the greenhouses

General tasks and activities in the Garden

·        Weeding of invasive and exotic species from the “Koppie” section.

·        Rubble removal from bins.

·        Cleaning of the braai area.

·        Cleaning and maintenance of garden furniture, equipment, tools and stores.

·        Cleaning of the staff room and gallery kitchen.

·        Collection of seed from the garden.

·        Collection of practical material from the garden.

Occupational Health and Safety

·        Maintenance of safety at the workplace.

Ad-hoc tasks

·        Assist with ad hoc tasks for the School of Biological Sciences.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  •        Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet.
  •        Knowledge of the appropriate plant growth / maintenance theory and practice.
  •        Knowledge of the appropriate plant propagation techniques.
  •        Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  •       The ability to function well individually and as part of a team.
  •       The ability to solve problems independently.
  •       Good planning and organizing skills.
  •        Effective time-management skills.
  •        Effective communication skills.
  •        A valid driver’s license.
  •        Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.

Minimum requirements

  •         Grade 12 / Certificate in Horticulture (NQF Level 4).

ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

  •       A minimum of one (1) year experience in the maintenance of botanical gardens.
  •       A minimum of one (1) year experience in general gardening tasks and activities.
  •       A minimum of one (1) year experience in Occupational Health and Safety.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
