PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The position is for a full-time lecturer in human geography in the subject group Geography and Environmental Sciences within the School of Geo- and Spatial Sciences on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. RESEARCH
· Undertake research in the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management
· Supervise Honours, Masters and PhD students
· Conduct own research and publication and raise research funding
· Support engaged research in the faculty.
2. TEACHING
· Teach Human Geography at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
· Quality assurance of teaching outputs
· Partake in student communication and support activities.
3. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
· Application of expertise in communities to address local issues
4. MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
· Module management and curriculum development
· General administrative tasks as required by NWU processes
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Knowledge, skills and competencies in the field of Human Geography.
· Ability to design, develop and improve Human Geography modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
· Ability to supervise postgraduate students.
· Ability to conceptualise and execute research projects and publish research findings in accredited journals.
· Ability to manage and complete all administrative tasks as required by the NWU.

· Demonstrate a high standard of interpersonal and communications skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
· Strong personal qualities and collegial approaches that contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment

· Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
Minimum requirements
· Master’s degree in Human Geography or related field
· 2 years experience in teaching
· 1 year experience in supervising postgraduate students - desirable
· 3 years experience in conducting research and proof of publication record in accredited journals
· PhD in Human Geography or related field– desirable
Evidence of obtaining external funding
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
