Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To promote quality teaching and learning, enhance research and innovation, and integrate community engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Learning

  • Offering quality teaching at undergraduate level and supervision to postgraduate students.
  • Completing Teaching and Learning related administration.
  • Participating in processes to enhance the quality of Teaching and Learning in the subject group, school, and faculty.

Research and Innovation

  • Identify and pursue meaningful opportunities to initiate and sustain community engagement initiatives that align research and teaching with community development and service.
  • Apply for research funds in and outside of the university.

Academic Citizenship

  • Serve on editorial boards and academic association committees.
  • Participate in the external evaluation of assessments for other universities.
  • Participate in peer review processes for academic publication.

Leadership in the NWU

  • Serve, as needed, on faculty committees and in subject or programme leadership roles as opportunities arise

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in History.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ teaching and learning experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at a reputable tertiary institution.
  • Applicants must have a substantial record of high-quality publications in accredited disciplinary academic journals and/or scholarly books published by reputable academic presses.
  • Professional membership of the National and International History Association.

ADDED ADVANTAGE

  • Extensive experience in research funding applications.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Computer literate in office tools.
  • Literate in the use of Learning Management Systems in the tertiary education sector.
  • Academic module and programme design.
  • Higher education pedagogical approaches.
  • Knowledge of funding systems and how to secure funding.

BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES

  • Must have the capacity to mentor students and junior colleagues.
  • Must be able to effectively and independently function as part of a team.
  • Must be able to work well with a diverse range of colleagues, students, and stakeholders.
  • Must be able to implement conflict resolution strategies and people management skills. 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
