Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Catering Officer is responsible for monitoring and supervision of catering in Voorhuis and Oosterhof dining halls. This includes food preparation for the two dining halls and for functions and events at NWU
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
Food Preparation
·        Monitor the production of food using approved menus and recipes in the kitchen
·        Ensure meals are produced in time for functions and stipulated mealtimes for dining halls
·        Ensure that special dietary requirements and identified intolerants are catered for in food production
 
Food Quality and stock control
·        Responsible for stock control and storage management.
·        Ensuring proper food temperature monitoring and maintenance.
·        Implement and monitor effective portion control.
·        Ensure excellent food  quality daily before service
·        Ensure effective wastage control during food production.
·        Conduct monthly stock takes for the dining halls
 
Dining Hall Administration 
·        Timeous procurement of kitchen ingredients
·        Maintenance of proper record keeping for dining halls
·        Daily cash up supervision in the dining halls
 
Staff management
·        Effective supervision of staff in the dining halls
·        Impartial rostering of staff in the dining halls
·        Handling staff conflict, discipline matters and staff motivation in the dining halls
·        Coordinating staff training for skills development in the dining halls
 
Occupational Health and Safety
·        Monitor adherence to all occupational health and safety regulations and procedures in the dining halls.
·        Attending to injury on duty cases (IOD) in the dining halls
·        Monitor and implement food safety procedures in the dining halls
·        Ensure that the dining halls operate in accordance with prescribed hygiene standards
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·        Knowledge of large-scale food preparation and catering of functions.
·        Knowledge of stock control and quality control.
·        Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and procedures.
·        Knowledge of food safety compliance and related legislation
·        Knowledge of personnel management and ensuring workplace discipline.
·        Knowledge of a point-of-sale payment system.
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·        The ability to work under pressure and solve problems.
·        Must be able to work shifts, weekends and public holidays
·        The ability to work as part of a team and apply good time management.
·        The ability to do physical work.
·        Good communication skills, be client- service orientated and the ability to liaise with colleagues and suppliers.

Minimum requirements

·        Grade 12 (NQF Level 4).
·        A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in large-scale food preparation kitchens
·        A valid driver`s licence (code EB)
 
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
•    Experience in Food Service Supervision is an added advantage.
 
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
