PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the position is to give assistance to the herbarium and botanical garden regarding data management, public liaison, and maintenance of plant collections.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1 TEACHING AND RESERCH SUPPORT
· Taxonomic collections database management
· Database layer security and upkeep
· Herbarium processes administration
· Plant material collection, preparation and storage
· Undergraduate practical support
2 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
· Public liaison
· Assistance with school/other groups that visit Botanical Garden
3 ADMINISTRATION
· Booking and venue administration
· Permit applications
· Voucher depositions and accessioning
4 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY
· OHS as per requirements
5 AD HOC
· Ad hoc tasks as per requirements
Minimum requirements
· BSc Honours in Botany/Biology/Ecology
· 2 years plant knowlegde experience
· 2 years experience in permit applications
· Valid drivers license, with 2 years driving experience
· 2 years experience working with the public
· 2 years laboratory experience
· 1 year experience in database management (BRAHMS) including database layer security and upkeep
· Professional registration with the SACNASP - desirable
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, email, internet) with accurate typing skills
· Excellent working knowledge of the BRAHMS database
· Excellent reading and writing skills in English and Afrikaans
· Able to communicate effectively with different stakeholders
· Good organisational skills
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Demonstrate a high standard of interpersonal and communications skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
· Time management skills
· Pro-active approach, self-starter – be able to self-identify tasks that needs completion

· The ability to function internally and externally on various levels
· Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
