Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Teaching and Learning

·        To facilitate teaching and learning of modules in Chemistry Education and Natural Sciences Education in contact and/or online mode to undergraduate and postgraduate students. This includes all aspects involved in teaching and learning such as facilitating classes in contact and distance mode, managing the LMS, curriculum development, the development of study guides, compiling assessments, marking assessments, designing and conducting practical work in Chemistry and participating in work-integrated learning. Doing research in Natural Sciences Education and research supervision to post-graduate students.

2.    Community Engagement

·        Initiate, participate and manage community engagement projects.

3.    Occupational Health and Safety

·        Active participation and involvement in OHS programmes to enhance safe laboratory management.

4.   Research

·        Involvement in research activities such as furthering of own studies in a relevant field (PhD).

Minimum requirements

·        An MSc or MEd degree (NQF level 9) in Physical Sciences Education.

·        A BEd honours or BSc honours (NQF level 8) in Physical Sciences Education

·        A first degree (BSc with PGCE) or BEd (NQF Level 7) in Physical Sciences with Chemistry on 3rd year level.

·        A minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience as a Teacher in Physical Science in the FET phase, including Grade 12.

ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

·        Leadership experience (active academic leadership and /or involvement in school or faculty committees)

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·        Ability and experience to facilitate teaching and learning of Chemistry and Natural Sciences education with focus on the FET phase.

·        Excellent communication skills (verbally, written and electronic).

·        Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.

·        Sound computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, compiling emails, competent use of Internet and LMS systems).

·        Efficiency to use digital tools and integrating digital technology for enhancing teaching and learning for contact and online classes.

·        Excellent knowledge and skills in applying active teaching and learning strategies to facilitate learning and promote self-directed learning in Chemistry- and Natural Sciences education.

·        Excellent knowledge and skills to facilitate and enhance pedagogical knowledge in Chemistry- and Natural Sciences education. 

·        Sound skills to facilitate and manage practical laboratory sessions in Chemistry and excellent knowledge of safety regulations.

·        To work in a team.

·        Good interpersonal relations with all fellow staff members and students.

·        Good time management and ability to work under extreme pressure.

·        Maintain professional relationships with the school, faculty, students, academics, and support staff.
