NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES VACANCY: SENIOR LABORATORY TECHNICIAN PEROMNES GRADE: P10 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FIXED TERM CONTRACT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION Additional capacity is needed within the FAHM to aid with the increasing research, contract research and service load. This position will be tasked to perform analyses and maintain specialised equipment in FAHM laboratories.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.           Operational activities
Pre-analytical and analytical processing of research samples and equipment maintenance
2.           Research & Innovation
Assistance with method development and improvement of analytical capabilities
3.           Teaching & Learning
Student training and co-supervision
4.           Laboratory Administration
Effective and efficient inventory management
5.           Quality control
Adhering to ISO 17025 standards where applicable
6.           Ad hoc tasks
As directed by the Research Director
7.           Occupational Health and Safety 

Minimum requirements

 •     B.Sc. hons in Biochemistry / Analytical chemistry NQF Level 8
 •     Minimum of 5 years in Basic laboratory skills and management
 •     Minimum of 2 years in Gas- and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS and LC-MS of Routine analyses, method development (research) and maintenance
 •     Minimum of 2 years in Post-graduate supervision and training of Co-supervision and/or

ADDED ADVANTAGE:
•     M.Sc. in Biochemistry / Analytical chemistry NQF Level 9
•     Must have membership with SAAMS / ChromSA / MSA   

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
•     Advanced knowledge of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) – application and maintenance
•     Advanced knowledge of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) – application and maintenance
•     Excellent computer skills with proven competency in mass spectrometric data processing
•     Record keeping of equipment booking, usage logs, results and quality documentation
•     Knowledge of liquid-liquid - and solid phase extraction
•     Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
•     Language proficient in a multi-lingual environment
