Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The School of Communication Studies at the NWU (Mahikeng Campus) has one vacancy for an Associate Professor in the vibrant and dynamic field of communication.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching
  • Teach advanced level courses to a diverse student body, including skills as well as specialty courses in journalism and media studies OR corporate communication.
  • Teach general communication courses.
  • Bring enthusiasm and strong pedagogy to teaching; engage in a practical, hands-on program of teaching; and provide strong mentoring to students.
  • Provide curricular leadership in the journalism and media studies OR corporate communication program.
  • Engage in scholarly and subject related case studies.
  • Provide service to the Institution.
  • Provide service to the Community.
  • Advise students.
Curriculum Development
  • Contribute to curricular revision to reflect the latest trends in the field, and to build and expand the journalism and media studies OR corporate communication subject group across all campuses.
Scholarly Work
  • Well established publication record and clear evidence of agenda for continued research in the field of journalism and media studies OR corporate communication.
  • Participation in research projects with colleagues.
Study Guidance
  • Provide study guidance to graduate students on an Honours, Masters, and Doctorate level.
Administration and Other Tasks
  • Responsible for all administrative tasks with regards to the above.
  • Study guide development and update.
  • Student marks and assessment.
  • Share responsibility for committee and department assignments as required.
  • Contribute to the Faculty Committees as well as University Committees.
  • Participate in services related to the life of the School and the community.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Communication with specialisation in Journalism and media studies OR Corporate Communication.
  • An extensive publication and proved post graduate supervision within the field specified.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ work experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ practical experience as a Journalism and media studies OR Corporate Communication specialist within the South African Industry, government related, as well as international experience.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
  • A professional membership with SACOMM, SACIA, etc.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Competencies in technical usage of teaching tools within institutions of higher learning.
  • Proved track record with relations within communication industry.
  • Sound understanding of the Journalism and media studies OR corporate communication discipline.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Team player within groups.
  • Sound relations with colleagues.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Ethical principles and academic integrity.
 
REMUNERATION
