Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Lecturer will be involved in teaching and learning, research and innovation and community engagement activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Teaching and Learning

The incumbent will have the following responsibilities:

  • Facilitating teaching and learning in Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy education modules for undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education programmes (e.g., Bachelor of Education and PGCE) in contact and/or online modes, while promoting student-centred pedagogy and self-directed learning (SDL) in line with institutional teaching and learning strategies.
  • Managing and facilitating learning through the institutional Learning Management System (LMS) to support technology-enhanced learning, active engagement, and collaborative knowledge construction. ·
  • Contributing to curriculum and module development in Mathematics and Mathematical literacy education, ensuring alignment with programme outcomes, professional teacher standards, and the development of NWU graduate attributes. ·
  • Preparing study guides, learning materials, and digital instructional resources that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, ethical awareness, and independent learning among student teachers. ·
  • Designing and administering formative and summative assessments that support self-directed learning, reflective practice, and authentic demonstration of professional competence. ·
  • Marking assessments and providing constructive, developmental feedback that supports student reflection, continuous improvement, and academic success. ·
  • Evaluating campus-based and school-based lesson presentations to strengthen pedagogical content knowledge, reflective teaching practice, and professional growth among student teachers. · Supporting work-integrated learning (WIL) activities in teacher education programmes by guiding students in connecting theoretical knowledge with classroom practice. ·
  • Contributing to quality assurance, innovation in teaching and learning, and engaged scholarship, fostering the development of responsible, critical, and socially responsive graduates.

1. Community Engagement

  • Initiate, participate in, and support community engagement and social impact projects related to science education. This includes contributing to outreach initiatives that strengthen science teaching and learning in schools and communities, knowledge-sharing activities, and partnerships that promote science literacy and teacher development.

2. Research

  • If candidate is not in possession of a PhD yet, there is evidence furthering of own studies. The candidate is capable to engage in research activities in science education and related fields, including conducting scholarly research, publishing in accredited peer-reviewed journals, presenting at academic conferences, and contributing to the research profile of the department. Supervise and co-supervise postgraduate students and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science education.

Minimum requirements

Junior Lecturer

  • A Bachelor of Education Honours or Bachelor of Science Honours degree specializing in Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy (NQF Level 8).
  • A minimum of one (1) year teaching experience in a high school setting, teaching Education in Mathematics or in Mathematical Literacy.

Lecturer

  • A master’s degree specializing in Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy (NQF Level 9)
  • A first degree - Bachelor Sciences with PGCE or Bachelor of Education Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy (NQF level 7/8).
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ teaching experience in a High school setting, teaching Education in Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy. 

ADDED ADVANTAGES

  • Must be registered with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability and experience to work from an evidence-based approach in Mathematics or in Mathematical Literacy
  • Excellent communication skills (verbally and written).
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft office, e-mails, power point, software for data analysis).
  • Ability to use e-media for teaching, studying and communication.

  • Good time management and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Maintain professional relationships with faculty, students, academics, and support staff.
