Job description

ABOUT THIS POSITION:
The National Research Foundation (South Africa) is funding a collaborative research project on gut function in broiler chickens. The project requires an outstanding, research-driven candidate for a postdoctoral fellowship. The successful fellow will join a dynamic team of scientists and technicians from the University of Mpumalanga, North-West University, and the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research. This team is investigating nutritional strategies to modulate gut function in broiler chickens.
 
This two-year NRF-funded fellowship begins on March 1, 2025, and offers tax-free remuneration.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design, plan, and execute studies related to the broiler gut function project.
  • Contribute to study management and provide training for postgraduate students.
  • Disseminate research outcomes through reports, seminars, and scientific publications.
  • Assist in writing peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Present research findings to internal and external stakeholders, as well as at national and international conferences.
  • Supervise and co-supervise postgraduate students.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends, developments, approaches, and techniques in the field, and facilitate their introduction and adoption.
  • Manage communication among all stakeholders involved in the research project.
  • Assist in grant proposal writing to secure additional funding.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD degree in Applied Microbiology, Nutritional Biochemistry, and Veterinary Physiology, or related fields, obtained within the last four years.
  • A minimum of five research articles on gut function in birds, probiotics, nucleotides or nanoparticles published in reputable journals.
  • Proven experience in applying multiple omics techniques (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and metagenomics) to gut health and related fields.
  • Proficiency in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of multiple omics data.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a research team.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and the capacity for independent research.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
