Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To plan and manage the research support administrative component on macro (mission) and micro (planning, management, and delivery of research support programmes) levels. The Senior Manager will also provide support and guidance on specific the departmental projects, processes and procedures, and tools and training within the institution.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Strategic Management and Planning:
· Ensure effective strategic planning of the research support administrative component on macro level (mission) and micro level (planning, management and delivery of research support programmes).
· Manage resources effectively and efficiently to ensure the budget and programme plan objectives are met.
· Maintain schedule for revision of policies, rules and procedures to ensure effective implementation.
· If necessary, conduct research, as determined by the Director:
· Research Support, that models future strategic positioning.
· Developing, documenting and maintaining, frameworks and tools for research support interventions.
· Management of workload and allocation of duties where appropriate.
2. Relationship Management:
· Manage professional relationships with research internal and external stakeholders.
· Providing training and guidance to colleagues across the institution to develop research management capabilities.
· Identify and prioritise internal and external stakeholders.
· Detecting opportunities for meaningful collaboration within and across industries.
· Retain and foster relationships with existing clients and partners.
· Identify and anticipate possible risks and risk factors and develop a plan to mitigate these risks.
3. Training:
· Lead research support training initiatives.
· Conduct project reviews to assess outcomes of training interventions/improvements.
· Document and communicate all lessons learned.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· A Master’s degree or equivalent (NQF level 9)
· Additional research management training is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
· A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a management role.
· A minimum of 3 years’ experience in programme management (preferably in a higher education environment).
· A minimum of 3 years research experience.
RECOMMENDATION:
· Membership with the Southern African Research & Innovation Management Association (SARIMA).

· Proven knowledge of the higher education landscape.
· Building networks and maintaining effective liaison with key stakeholders.
· Project Planning & Execution – Develop necessary protocols, manuals and operational guidelines for the strategic projects.
· Sufficient level of technical background to evaluate project risks accurately and objectively.
· Planning, organising, supporting, supervising, disseminating, higher degrees support projects.
· Managing multi-phase projects.
· Proven knowledge of research management.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
