Call for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
The School/Research entity of Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings (UPSET) in the Faculty of Humanities at the North-West University is inviting applications from outstanding early career researchers for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (PDRF) in English (Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Reading Literacies, Multilingualism and/or Language Practice).
Job description
To be shortlisted, applicants must have a relevant research track record, as well as demonstrate the potential to contribute significantly to the subject group/research entity’s research outputs.
Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings, or UPSET for short, is a research focus area with members across the three campuses of the North-West University. Research conducted in the Entity focuses on how humans use language in the complex, multilingual setting of South Africa. More information about the Entity can be obtained from: https://humanities.nwu.ac.za/. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in Second Language Acquisition, Reading Literacies, Multilingualism and / or Language Practice.
Scope of research:
The goal of the fellowship is to collect data on second language acquisition skills and reading literacy from students enrolled at South African institutions of higher learning. The candidate will be required to participate in the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative language data.
Job description:
- Commencement of duties: 1st May 2024 or soon after;
- Full-time position;
- In-person and electronic data collection from students;
- Qualitative and quantitative analysis of language data;
- Data cleaning and data management;
- Prepare and submit research publications;
- Assist in organizing workshops, conferences, team meetings, and field trips;
- Attend and present papers at workshops, seminars and conferences; and
- Assist in writing grant applications.

- A completed Doctoral degree within the last five years in English or related field
- The applicant must be below 45 years or younger.
