Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To lead and execute preclinical in vivo studies involving rodent models (mice and rats) in support of internal and client sponsored research projects. The Temporary Senior Researcher will be responsible for designing studies, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and ensuring regulatory compliance. A key part of this role involves liaising directly with external clients to provide scientific guidance, manage expectations, and deliver high-quality research outcomes in a CRO-like environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Study Direction and Project Management

  • Serve as GLP Study Director where applicable.
  • Manage project timelines, scope, and resources.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams (vet, QA, tech staff, analysts).
  • Ensure timely and successful completion of milestones.

Study Design and Scientific Execution

  • Develop ethical, regulatory-compliant protocols.
  • Design and implement pharmacology/toxicology/PK-PD studies.
  • Ensure data quality and adherence to SOPs.

Data Analysis, Reporting, and Client Delivery

  • Analyze and interpret study results using appropriate tools.
  • Prepare accurate internal reports and client-ready documentation.
  • Present findings clearly to clients and stakeholders.
  • Respond to client feedback and follow-ups professionally.

Regulatory and Quality Compliance

  • Ensure GLP, AAALAC, NDoH, and SANS 10386 compliance.
  • Support internal and external audits and inspections.
  • Contribute to SOP development and deviation management.
  • Uphold animal welfare and ethical standards throughout.

Capacity Building and Continuous Improvement

  • Mentor and support junior researchers and technical staff.
  • Contribute to onboarding and capability uplift during the contract period.
  • Identify and implement operational improvements.
  • Participate in lessons-learned sessions or debriefs.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Para-veterinary sciences, or related discipline (NQF level 10).
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ laboratory experience in animal research.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in regulatory and quality compliance.

ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

  • A minimum of one (1) year project and study management experience.
  • A minimum of one (1) year client-facing / external liaison experience.
