Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The candidate will engage in teaching and learning, in research supervision of Honours, master’s and/or PHD students and in research and writing publications within Computer Science and/or Information Systems fields, while maintaining an active role in both the community and industry spheres.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and learning:

  • Teaching Computer Science modules at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
  • Mentoring project students at honours level.

Research:

  • Conduct scholarly research in the key areas of the school and research centre.
  • Publish in high impact journals and books.
  • Supervision of masters and/or doctoral students.

Engagement and administrative:

  • Planning, implementing and evaluating the school’s teaching-learning programmes and other activities.
  • Developing own professional and academic leadership and management skills, with a view to academic leadership and effective quality management in the school.
  • Engaging with external stakeholders.

Minimum requirements

LECTURER:

  • A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Computer Science or related.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience at university level.
  • Plans of pursuing a PhD (NQF level 10).

SENIOR LECTURER:

  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Computer Science or related.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ teaching experience at university level.
  • A proven research track record within Computer Science or Information Systems fields.

RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  • Industry certifications in suitable technology stocks that are relevant to the modules being taught at the NWU in the School of Computer Science and Information Systems.
  • Membership of Professional IT/CS/IS societies.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in an industry of the modules being taught in the department.
  • Supervision of master’s and PhD-students.
  • A proven track record of management experience.
  • Involvement in the community with subject related projects.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • A proven track record of industry experience, (Preferably in the technologies we specifically teach – Python, C , Java, C#, Office, SQL, PowerBI, UiPath, etc)
  • Ability to provide guidance in master’s and PhD degree dissertations. Experience in supervising at honours or masters level already would be required, but at the lecturer level there would not be an expectation of having delivered a student yet, just proof that supervision is taking place. PhD supervision would only be applicable at the Senior Lecturer level and at this level there should have been at least a master’s dissertation supervised to completion.
  • A proven track record of having at least one publication in an accredited journal or conference proceeding per year. At lecturer level this would be a conference proceeding publication per year, and at the senior lecturer level this would be a journal publication per year.
  • Perform administrative and management tasks.  
  • Maintaining good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally (writing and verbally) in the various multilingual environments of the NWU – on all levels (students, colleagues and management).
  • Assist / take the lead with module / programme development. 
  • Conduct independent and co-operative research within the focus areas of the school and research centre.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
