Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The required candidate will be responsible for teaching and research in the specific field of rangeland ecology.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Teaching and Learning
  • Undergraduate teaching in the specific subject areas of botany, plant ecology, ecosystem and/or rangeland ecology, in accordance with the set requirements of the alignment programme between campuses.
  • Honours teaching in any of the 3 areas indicated above.
  • Effective teaching practices – blended approach.
  • Satisfactory student success rate according to the set faculty norms.
  • Monitoring of and engagement with at-risk students to ensure student success.
  • Effective assessment and evaluation practices.

Research and Innovation

  • Effective recruitment and supervision of honours, masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students.
  • Effective designing and management of research projects.
  • Attraction and management of external research funds.
  •  Forging of local and international collaborations.
  • Production of high-quality research outputs.
  • NRF rating.
Administration
  • Involvement in any required administrative tasks of the subject group and/or as tasked by management.
  • Contributions to advising students.Participation in recruitment activities.
  • Participation in recruitment activities.
Community Engagement and Academic Scholarship
  • Involvement in the initiatives of the department or school at large.
  • Mentorship of junior staff.

Minimum requirements

  • A Phd (NQF Level 10) in Botany or Plant Ecology.
  • Accreditation with the South African Association of Botanists (SAAB).

Associate Professor:

  • A minimum of five (5) years’ teaching experience at a tertiary level.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the supervision of postgraduate students.

Senior Lecture:

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience at a tertiary level.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the supervision of postgraduate students.
ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:
  • Membership with Botanical/Ecology Societies.
  • A minimum of one (1) to two (2) years’ general management experience.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet.
  • Statistical techniques for community analysis and interpretation.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
  • Proficiency in research methodology and technical writing.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
  • Effective time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team or subject group.
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.
  • The ability to solve problems independently.
  • Good planning and organizing skills as well as good report writing skills.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
