PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The subject group History of Art at the NWU Potchefstroom campus seeks to appoint one new member of staff (Lecturer) to assume teaching and research responsibilities. Candidates with an academic background and research experience in History of Art, Visual art and Culture, and related disciplines are invited to apply.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching
· Teach introductory and advanced level courses to a diverse student body
· Bring enthusiasm and strong pedagogy to teaching; engage in a practical, hands-on programme of teaching; and provide strong mentoring to students
· Provide curricular leadership in the History of Art Programme
· Engage in scholarly and subject-related case research
· Provide service to the community
2. Curriculum development
· Contribute to curricular revision to reflect the latest trends in the field and to build and expand the History of Art subject group
3. Scholarly work
· Publication record and clear evidence of agenda for continued research in the field of History of Art and Visual Studies
· Contribution to the academic citizenship and development of the subject group
· Development of the research niche ViNCO (Visual Narratives and Creative Outputs)
· Participation in research projects with colleagues
4. Postgraduate Supervision
· Provide supervision to graduate students on Honours and master’s levels
· Proven record of supervision at Honours level
5. Administration and other tasks
· Responsible for all administrative tasks with regards to the above
· Study guide and course material/curriculum development and updating
· Student marks and assessment
· Share responsibility for committee and subject-related assignments as required
· Participate in services related to the life of the school and community
Minimum requirements
· A Masters (NQF 9) in History of Art, Visual Studies or a closely related discipline
· A minimum of three (3) years’ teaching and learning experience.
· Clear evidence of a research agenda/ proven publication record.
ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCES:
· A PhD (NQF level 10) in History of Art, Visual Studies or a closely related discipline.
· Experience in postgraduate student supervision.
· Member of SAVAH, SAJAH, or any other applicable scholarly association.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Functional knowledge of activities in the context of higher education.
· Functional knowledge of industry-related environments.
· Sound understanding of the broad History of Arts and Visual Culture discipline.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Collegiality and sound relations with colleagues
· punctuality and ability to meet deadlines timeously
· Able to work independently
· Ethical principles and academic integrity
· Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in multilingual environments
Remuneration
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
