NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (MAHIKENG CAMPUS) DIVISION: PEOPLE AND CULTURE DEPARTMENT: EMPLOYEE RELATIONS VACANCY: SPECIALIST: EMPLOYEE RELATIONS PEROMNES NUMBER: P8 POSITION NUMBER: M000505 PERMANENT APPOINTMENT Purpose of the position: Manage individual and collective relationships within the NWU through the development, implementation, maintenance and execution of good practices that enable the achievements of the NWU’s organisational objectives compliant with the legislative framework. Maintain healthy employee relations on campuses and develop effective working relationships with staff, management and unions while enhancing and promoting the new strategic plan of the NWU. Ensure that all stakeholders are empowered in terms of legislation, policies and procedures.
Job description

Manage Individual Relationships
  • Execute, implement, monitor and maintain policies, procedures and practices to ensure legal compliance of the NWU with labour legislation.
 Manage Collective Relationships
  • Execute processes, policies, procedures and practices to ensure legal compliance of the NWU with labour legislation while ensuring sound relationship and environment between unions, management and employees.
Communication and Training
Execute training of employees on processes, policies, procedures and practices including, but not limited to:
  • Disciplinary procedure
  • Abscondment procedure
  • Suspension procedure
  • Intoxication procedure
  • Procedure for personal searches of employees
  • Reporting acts of dishonesty to the SAPS
  • Procedure for managing incapacity
  • Employee grievance procedure
  • Harassment procedure
  • Human Rights
  • Gender Equality
  • Labour legislation amendments
  • Social Media
Implement and maintain policies and procedures on an on-going basis.
Human Rights Matters
  • Execute the arrangement of annual seminars/awareness campaigns are arranged – involve the South African Human Rights Commission.
  • Perform all administrative tasks associated with the NWU HRC.
  • Manage all Human Rights violations.
  • Record keeping of all violations.
  • Assist the Director: Employee Relations with the annual report to Council.
Execute Ad Hoc Tasks
  • Execute ad hoc tasks as assigned by Line Management or any member of Institutional Management.
Leadership
  • Stakeholder relationship development and effectiveness.
  • Regulatory and statutory compliance and reporting.
  • Process and system utilisation and adherence.
  • Personal effectiveness, wholeness and development.
  • Values-based behaviour leadership and personal compliance.

Minimum requirements

  • Legal degree or similar qualification or HR degree with labour relations as field of specialisation (NQF 7).
  • Three to five years’ operational experience as an ER Practitioner.
Other competency requirements:
  •  In-depth knowledge of labour legislation and legal knowledge as it applies to the organisational context.

  • Ability to work with cross functional teams.
  • Proven negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to liaise effectively across all levels of responsibility in the organisation.

  • Ability to function effectively under pressure while maintaining good human relations.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Be able to provide training.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
