Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Appointment of a Senior lecturer with expertise in the use of stable isotopes to assess micronutrient bioavailability to strengthen the research outputs and teaching capability of the Centre of Excellence for Nutrition.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching & Learning:

  • Teaching at the postgraduate level
  • Supervision of postgraduate students
  • Develop and update study material.

Research & Innovation:

  • Instantiate and conduct research.
  • Publish in high-impact and quartile journals.
  • Attend congresses and contribute to internationalization.
  • Initiate and participate in funding applications.

Academic Leadership:

  • Member of national and international societies
  • Serves on internal / faculty / institutional committees.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):

  • Comply with OHS plans and protocols.

Social Responsiveness & Industry Involvement:

  • Sharing of expertise.
  • Serves on national/international panels/societies.
  • Cultural and/or community activities.
  • Networking and partnership.

Minimum requirements

  • A doctorate (NQF level 10) in Nutrition.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in human iron bioavailability studies using stable isotopes.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ hands-on laboratory experience.

ADDED ADVANTAGE

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ postgraduate student supervision experience.

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to conceptualise, plan and execute original research in iron bioavailability using stable isotopes.
  • Ability to write successful grant proposals.
  • Ability to conceptualise, structure and write scientific research articles and reports.
  • Ability to guide, mentor and deliver postgraduate students.
  • Ability to think innovatively and analytically in the research and teaching environment.
  • Ability to strengthen human capacity development.
  • Advanced computer skills that include competence in MS Office, the use of statistical software, email and internet.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
