Job description
High demand of sports massage services has expedited plans for the creation of a new position for the appointment of an in-house sports massagetherapist. This position is to be funded from 3rd stream income generated by recovery services.
1. Service Delivery& Client Education
- Work closely with coaches, sport scientists, physiotherapists and recovery staff for athlete recovery planning.
- Contribute to integrated athlete care strategies.
- Ensure athletes receive treatment within allocated times.
- Support peak recovery periods during competitions and training camps or sport events.
- Ensure treatment align with athlete training and competition schedule.
- Provide guidance on self-care, including stretching techniques, posture improvement and relaxation/recovery modalities.
2. Facility and Equipment Management
- Ensure massage tables, oils, towels and equipment are available and clean.
- Report any equipment faults or supply shortages.
3. Professional Standards and Hygiene
- Maintain high standards of hygiene, safety and professionalism in the treatment area.
- Follow facility health, safety and ethical guidelines.
4. Professional Development
- Keep scope of practice related CPD’s up to date according to AHPCSA guidelines.
- Keep annual AHPCSA registration up to date.
5. Record Keeping
- Maintain treatment records and athlete feedback.
- Communicate relevant information to relevant parties.
- Refer athletes when necessary and don’t work outside scope of practice.
6. OHS
Minimum requirements
- A Diploma in Therapeutic Massage with specialisation in Sports Massage (NQF Level 6).
- A Diploma in Therapeutic Massage with specialisation in Sports Massage (NQF Level 6).
- Registration with the Allied Health Professional Council (AHPCSA).
ADDED ADVANTANGE:
- Membership with the Massage Therapist Association of South Africa (MTASA)
- A valid Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) Practice Number.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- A sports massage therapist requires strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, combined with practical expertise in soft tissue assessment, injury prevention, and rehabilitation techniques.
- Key skills include proficiency in various massage methods (such as deep tissue, trigger point therapy, STR, and MET), conducting client assessments, and delivering effective pre- and post-event treatments.
- The role also demands physical stamina, attention to detail in monitoring client progress, and strong communication skills for effective client management and collaboration with coaches or medical professionals, while maintaining accurate records and professional standards.
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- The therapist must be able to work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment, demonstrating clear and professional communication with all relevant stakeholders.
- They must uphold client confidentiality, ensure safety, and maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
- The therapist is also expected to dress appropriately in accordance with the workplace standards.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
