Introduction
NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN POSITION NUMBER: P000793 VACANCY: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN PEROMNES GRADE: P11 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Perform routine and non-routine analyses using different water and soil analytical techniques • Have experience on pH, EC, extractions, titrations, Walkley black, etc. • Leco for CNS and other instruments. • Have experience on soil structure analyses such as sand, silt and clay, particle size distribution, density, field capacity, etc. Be responsible and accountable for the interpretation of the laboratory results, that are analysed by different laboratory techniques, before they are sent to our customers. Perform administration duties of the laboratory, such as generating quotations, proforma invoices, invoices, and others. Be the face of the laboratory to our customers, by interacting with them regarding different queries, analysis of their samples and any other laboratory information that the customers may require.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
·       Analyis of samples.
·       Interpretation of lab results and sending them to customers.
·       Laboratory Accreditation.
·       Administrative duties.
·       Occupational Health and System.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Hands on experience on different analytical techniques for water and soil analyses.
·       Ability to analyze and check data, detect trends and take corrective actions when needed.
·       Quality Control Analysis. Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
·       Excellent knowledge of laboratory safety and good practices.
·       Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of SANAS ISO 17025 and accreditation.
·       Willingness to be appointed as a SANAS Technical Signatory.
·       Perform administration duties of the laboratory, such as generating quotations, proforma invoices, invoices, and others.
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Strong attention to details.
·       Be able to work alone and as a diligent team member.
·       Problem solving and trouble shooting.
·       Analytical, a chemist analyzes a lot of data, thus, having an analytical mind is essential to their success.
·       Effective planning, organizing, controlling and report on own work with multiple priorities.
·       Sound understanding of QMS requirements.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 
·       A BSc honours degree (NQF level 8) in Chemistry or related are of specialisation.
·       A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in an analytical lab.
·       A minimum of 3 years' experience in water and soil analyses.
·       A minimum of 3 years' laboratory administration experience.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES:
·       A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Chemistry.
REMUNERATION:
 
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
