Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Teaching and Learning
• Deliver high quality lectures and support to students
• Set assessments and ensure students receive constructive feedback
• Develop study material
• Effectively and promptly assist students with queries and problems
2. Academic Administration
• Keep class discipline and adhere to all the requirements for the administration of allocated modules as required by the NWU rules and policy.
• Act as module coordinator for aligned modules across campuses.
• (Possibly) act as subject group leader or deputy subject group leader.
3. Research
• Write and publish research articles in accredited journals
• Present research at applicable research conferences
• Provide postgraduate supervision and study guidance (when needed)
• Must be able to engage and contribute to the research that is done in the applied linguistics sub-program (s) in the research entity UPSET (Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings)..
4. Community Engagement
• Share professional expertise to enrich the community
• Membership and/or involvement with relevant professional bodies

Minimum requirements

• PhD in Language Practice, Applied Linguistics and / or relevant linguistics degree
• Teaching experience at university level: Undergraduate (4 years) and postgraduate (2 years)
• Work effectively as part of a team and relate well with colleagues and peers

ADDED ADVANTAGE AND PREFERENCE:
• South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) membership
• South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) accreditation for translation, interpreting or editing

KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
• Lecturing experience at a tertiary institution
• Excellent language and communication skills
• Experience working as a language practitioner
• Competence in an African Language (preference will be given to isizulu and Sesotho as the main languages of the students)
• Thorough theoretical and practical knowledge and abilities pertaining to audiovisual translation (AVT: subtitling, audio description) and subtitling systems (e.g. Aegisub, Subtitle Edit, Subtitle Workshop, Poliscript) – should be able to teach students how to use subtitling software and other AVT tools.
• Thorough theoretical and practical knowledge and abilities pertaining to computer assisted translation (CAT), machine translation and CAT-tools (e.g. Autshumato, Wordfast Classic, SDL Trados) – should be able to teach students how to use specialized translation tools.
• Ability to use teaching and learning technologies (such as an LMS) and basic computer software (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point)

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work/function within a team as well as independently
• Ability to work under pressure
• Student support experience (for example, SI facilitation, tutoring, peer mentoring)
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
