Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

This positions forms part of the ITC Operations & Infrastructure group. This position focuses on installing and maintaining of all NWU IT-Systems across all campuses of the University.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specialists Advice:

  • Provides detailed and specific advice regarding the application of their specialism to the organisation's planning and operations. Actively maintains knowledge in one or more identifiable specialisms. Recognises and identifies the boundaries of their own specialist knowledge. Where appropriate, collaborates with other specialists to ensure advice given is appropriate to the organisation's needs.

Project management:

  • Defines, documents and executes small projects or sub-projects. Works alone or with a small team actively participating in all phases of the project. Applies appropriate project management methods and tools. Identifies, assesses and manages risks effectively. Agrees project approach with stakeholders and prepares realistic project plans (including scope, schedule, quality, risk and communication plans). Tracks activities against the project schedule, managing stakeholder involvement as appropriate. Monitors costs, times, quality and resources used takes action where these exceed agreed tolerances.

Systems installation/decommissioning:

  • Monitors service component capacity and initiates actions to resolve any shortfalls according to agreed procedures. Applies techniques to control the demand upon a particular resource or service. Contributes to capacity modelling and planning. Supports the design of service component capacity.

Capacity management:

  • Monitors service component capacity and initiates actions to resolve any shortfalls according to agreed procedures. Applies techniques to modify demand for a particular resource or service.

Integration and Installation:

  • Design and implement integration interfaces. Actively takes a leading role in implementation of solutions, as per architecture requirements. Contributes to overall design of solutions and defines technical criteria for product or component choices.

Configuration management:

  • Applies tools, techniques and processes to track, log and correct information related to configuration items. Verifies and approves changes ensuring the protection of assets and components from unauthorised change, diversion and inappropriate use. Ensures that users comply with identification standards for object types, environments, processes, life cycles, documentation, versions, formats, baselines, releases and templates. Performs audits to check the accuracy of the information and undertakes any necessary corrective action under direction.

Release and deployment:

  • Uses approved tools and techniques for specific deployment activities. Administers the recording of activities, logging of results and documents technical activities undertaken.

Systems Software:

  • Monitors operational systems for resource usage and failure rates, to inform and facilitate system software tuning. Applies system software parameters to maximise throughput and efficiency. Installs and tests new versions of system software. Contributes to preparation of software implementation procedures with fall back contingency plans.

Applications support: 

  • Follows agreed procedures to identify and resolve issues with applications. Uses application management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics. Carries out agreed applications maintenance tasks.

Database administration:

  • Performs standard database maintenance and administration tasks. Uses database management system software and tools to collect performance statistics.

Minimum requirements

  • An NQF Level 6 qualification in IT Systems, supplemented by 1–2 years of additional IT certifications relevant to the position.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience in System Project Management.

ADDED ADVANTAGE:

  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience working with System Software, including Linux, MySQL, and Apache Tomcat.
