PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
• The Chemical Resource Beneficiation (CRB) at North-West University is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate for a postdoctoral position in Organic Chemistry. The candidate should have a strong organic chemistry background and be competent in organic compound characterization. Knowledge of surfactants is a strong advantage.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Research
· Teaching and mentoring
· Administrative tasks
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Conduct research in organic synthesis and surfactants. Analyse and characterize organic compounds using a variety of techniques.
· Rigorous documentation of research findings with an emphasis on publications in peer-reviewed journals.
· Knowledge and/or hands-on experience in operating/interpreting a variety of chemical/physical characterisation techniques such as NMR, FT-IR, XRD, MS, HPLC, tensiometry
· Assist in the supervision of postgraduate students. Training and transfer of knowledge/skills to MSc and/or PhD students in the group.
· Contribute to the acquisition of research funding.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Demonstrated experimental background and publication record in organic chemistry.
· Good problem solving, troubleshooting and analytical skills.
· Proven ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently to meet project milestones and scientific goals.
· Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
· Good interpersonal skills.
· Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
Minimum requirements
• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic synthesis, Analytical Chemistry
• 1 to 3 Years’ knowledge of surfactants
