PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The School of Communication Studies at the NWU (Potchefstroom Campus) has one vacancy for a lecturer (Master’s degree) in the vibrant and dynamic field of communication, subject field journalism media studies OR development communication.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and learning:
- Teach introductory and advanced level courses to a diverse student body, including topics relevant to theory in the field of communication, with specialisation in journalism and media studies (e.g., media and society), and practical mass media skills and/or development communication.
- Primary teaching responsibilities will include courses/topics in introductory news production following a process-based approach across all platforms, and mass media theory.
- Teach general communication courses, especially introductory level development communication courses.
- Bring strong pedagogy to teaching; engage in a practical, hands-on program of teaching; and provide strong mentoring to students.
- Contribute to curricular revision to reflect the latest trends in the field, and to build and expand the communication subject group across all campuses.
- Contribute to curriculum development.
- Study guide development and updates.
- Administration of student marks and assessment.
- Provide supervision to postgraduate students in journalism and media studies and/or development communication.
- Advise students on a research, academic and work-integrated learning (WIL) level.
Research and innovation:
- Doing scholarly research in the context of sustainable communication with the aim of research outputs.
- Participation in research projects with colleagues.
Academic leadership, management and administration:
- Responsible for all administrative tasks with regards to the above.
- Share responsibility for faculty, school, subject-group, and specialisation group assignments as required.
Community and scientific engagement:
- Engage in various community engagement activities, including service learning, engaged research and volunteerrism for the benefit of the community.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Master’s degree in Communication with specialisation in journalism and media studies and/or development communication (NQF Level 9).
- A minimum of 2 year’s teaching experience of undergraduate and honours students at a higher education institution.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Experience in postgraduate supervision.
- Publication of academic articles/Presentation of work at academic conferences.
- Involvement in community engagement activities.
- Professional experience as an editorial journalist.
- Experience in creating different types of digital media for news.
- Experience in using online learning management systems for presentation of lesson content and assessment.
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
- Sound understanding of the broad communication discipline with emphasis on journalism in the 21st century.
- Ability to teach in a face-to-face, blended, or online environment.
- Ability to use the MS Office Suite.
- Adobe Creative Suite competencies (with emphasis on InDesign and Photoshop).
- Ability to create study material.
- Ability to create a learning environment.
- Within higher education: The ability to teach all journalistic programmes offered at the NWU.
- Within industry-related environments: Competent in journalistic writing, editing, design, social media, data visualisation and analysis, multimedia storytelling and magazine journalism.
- Experience in broadcast journalism and news management a plus.
