INTRODUCTION
The North-West University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following position, which forms part of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Preference will be given to applications from black (African, Coloured and Indian), female and disabled candidates. Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age. The nGAP represents the eighth phase of the Staffing South African Universities Framework (SSAUF), which the Minister of Higher Education and Training approved at the start of 2015 as an initiative to improve the academic staffing capacity of South African universities. The programme aims at addressing the urgent and challenging imperative to recruit, support and retain black (African, Coloured and Indian), female academic and disabled staff to address the under-representation at all levels in the sector. It is a key vehicle to contribute to the transformation of the academic staff profile in disciplines of greatest need. nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme in terms of which they will be employed on a permanent full-time basis at the NWU under the University's normal conditions of service. They will be expected to register for and complete their doctoral studies, participate successfully in the DHET's Staffing South Africa's Universities Development Programme, and work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme, nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment. They will be expected to work for additional two years at NWU after the completion of the six-year developmental programme. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The nGAP position in the Setswana is part of a DHET initiative to improve academic staffing at South African universities. It is a prestigious programme enabling young black candidates to follow a career as an academic. nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme on a permanent full-time basis under the University's normal conditions of service and will work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme, nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and Learning.:
· Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning
o Taking part in the research activities of the subject group while proceeding with own research to improve your standing in the academic field.
o Teach Setswana undergraduate and honours module content covering the linguistic disciplines of phonetics / phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
· Preparation of study guides and subject material design/development
· Participation in Co- supervision opportunities within the subject group. Preference will be given to candidates who can supervise creative writing projects in Sesotho.
· General Module Administration
2. Research
· Completing a PhD in a relevant field within 4 years of appointment.
· Peer-reviewing research articles and scholarly book contributions.
· Co-operation in subject group projects in creative writing and research.
3. Management and University service:
· Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise.
· Involvement is subject group, school, and faculty specific committees.
4. Community Engagement:
· Participate in individual community projects and school projects.
Minimum requirements
All Applicants should ensure the minimum requirements below are indicated on their C.V’s.
· MA degree in Setswana with a focus on descriptive linguistics i.e phonetics, phonology and/ or morphosyntax.
· The master’s degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of results in your application- attach transcript.
· CV to provide clear evidence teaching assistance experience at university (minimum 1-2 years)
· Excellent Language Competence in Setswana- Candidate will be expected to teach in Setswana.
· Upon Appointment the candidate will be required to register for a PhD in Setswana descriptive linguistics i.e phonetics, phonology and/ or morphosyntax
N.B (If candidate is already registered for a PhD in a different field please indicate in your application if you will be willing to change the field of study and focus on the expected requirement).
RECOMMENDATIONS:
· Membership of relevant societies (i.e. African language and/or English literary/writers’ societies)
· Experience in research and teaching in Setswana linguistics.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Excellent communication skills in English and Setswana.
· Excellent level of computer literacy, including MS Office.
· Experience in using Learning Management Systems
· Ability to teach and assess Setswana undergraduate and honours module content covering the linguistic disciplines of phonetics / phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
· Ability and willingness to undertake research, either individually (under the supervision of a mentor) or as part of a team.
· Ability and willingness to write up, present and publish research results in academic journals.
· Ability and willingness to do in-person teaching at the Potchefstroom campus during scheduled class times.
· Ability and willingness to consult with students about course content.
· Excellent level of computer literacy and willingness to learn to use the online learning management system (eFundi or a new system).
· Ability to manage assessment marks in a spread sheet.

Remuneration
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
