Introduction
NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICAL AND STATISTICAL SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: P000710 VACANCY: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A6 / A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION We are searching for an experienced researcher in mathematical statistics or a closely related field and/or an experienced statistical consultant. The candidate is expected to have ample experience in successfully completing research projects and/or statistical consultation projects, including the publication of results and findings (in academic journals, for example). The candidate will also be expected to act as mentor of junior staff in the department. The candidate will also be responsible for lecturing undergraduate and/or postgraduate statistics modules and can also be expected to be involved in the development of new modules. Other duties include the supervision of PhD and Master’s student projects.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and learning
·        Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules. Development of new modules and programs.
Consultation
·        Assist in planning research projects, analysing data, publication of research and review and approve ethics applications.
Research
·        Conducting academic research (publishing of research papers, etc.)

 
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
·        Conduct independent academic research in the discipline of mathematical statistics or closely related fields.
·        Conduct academic research in this discipline as part of a team of researchers.
·        Present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
·        Be involved in course and program development and in keeping courses and programs up to date.
·        Act as group coordinator for modules with multiple groups.
·        Handle large undergraduate classes.
·        Handle administrative tasks and take on leadership roles within the subject group.
·        Supervise PhD and Master’s students.
·        Communicate well in English (verbally and in writing).
 

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
·        Work independently, but also as a team.
·        Have good people skills.
·        Professional and ethical behaviour.
·        Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff.

Minimum requirements

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Minimum requirements:
•          A PhD (NQF Level 10) in Mathematical Statistics and/or Applied Statistics, Computational Statistics, or related field.
•          A minimum of 5 years’ solid track record of academic publications in accredited journals.
•          A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the lecturing of modules.
•          A minimum of 5 years’ experience in consultation services.
•          A proven track record of supervising students at a PhD (AP) and Master’s students to completion.
ADDED ADVANTAGES:
•          A minimum of 5 years’ experience with administration of large class groups.
•          Proven record of service to academic societies and associations.
•          Strong proficiency in using statistical software.
 
SENIOR LECTURER
Minimum requirements:
•          A PhD (NQF Level 10) in Mathematical Statistics and/or Applied Statistics, Computational Statistics, or related field.
•          A minimum of 3 years’ solid track record of academic publications in accredited journals.
•          A minimum of 3 years’ experience in the lecturing of modules.
•          A minimum of 3 years’ experience in consultation services.
•          A proven track record of supervising students at a PhD (AP) and Master’s students to completion.
 
Added advantages:
•          A minimum of 3 years’ experience with administration of large class groups.
•          Proven record of service to academic societies and associations.
•          Strong proficiency in using statistical software.
 
 
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
