PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
We are searching for an experienced academic in mathematical statistics. The candidate is expected to have ample experience in teaching and learning, successfully completing research projects, including publications in national and international accredited scientific journals. The candidate will also be expected to act as mentor of junior staff in the department. The candidate will also be responsible for lecturing undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules and can also be expected to be involved in the development of new modules. Other duties include the supervision or co-supervision of PhD and Master’s student projects.
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning
- Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules. Development of new modules and programmes.
Research
- Conducting academic research (publishing of research papers, etc.) and supervision of postgraduate (PhD and Master’s) students.
Administration/Management
- Help with administrative, organisational and management tasks within the subject group.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
The candidate must be able to:
- Present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
- Act as a group coordinator for modules with multiple groups.
- Handle large undergraduate classes.
- Supervise honours students.
- Communicate well in English (verbally and in writing).
- Analyse data using advanced statistical techniques by means of suitable statistical computer packages (such as SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA).
· Provide guidance with regards to data collection and data analysis.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Professional and ethical behaviour.
- Work well independently and within a team.
- Have very good people skills.
- Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff.
Minimum requirements
- A PhD (NQF Level 10) in Mathematical Statistics.
- A minimum of seven (7) years’ experience working with the administration of large class groups.
- A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate mathematical statistics courses.
- A proven publication track record of a minimum of seven (7) articles.
- A proven track record of supervising students at a PhD and Master’s level.
ADDED ADVANTAGES:
- Membership with the South African Statistical Association.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
