Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

We are searching for an experienced statistician to join our team of statistical consultants whose duties include assisting clients with planning and scoping of projects relying on the analysis of data, carrying out statistical analyses and reporting results. The candidate is expected to have ample experience in successfully completing statistical consultation projects and will also be responsible for mentoring junior consultants in the department. The candidate will also be responsible for lecturing undergraduate and/or postgraduate statistics modules and can also be expected to be involved in the development of new modules. Other duties include the supervision of honours student projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and learning

  • Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules. Development of new modules and programmes.

Research

  • Conducting academic research (publishing of research papers, etc.). 

Consultation

  • Assist in planning research projects, analysing data, publication of research and review and approve ethics applications.

Money stream 3

  • Participate in other money stream 3 endeavours, such as the presentation of short courses.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Mathematical Statistics and/or Applied Statistics, Computational Statistics or a closely related field.
  • Experience with providing statistical consultations.
  • A proven publication track record. 
  • Experience with the administration of large class groups.
  • A proven track record of supervising postgraduate students. 

In addition to the above:

SENIOR LECTURER

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses. 

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses. 

ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  • Involvement in relevant academic associations.
  • Experience in using statistical software.

FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)

The candidate must be able to:

  • Assist clients with the planning of research projects.
  • Analyse data using advanced statistical techniques by means of suitable statistical computer packages (such as SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA).
  • Provide guidance with regards to data collection.
  • Provide assistance with the interpretation of processed results, and also provide explanations of statistical concepts where necessary.
  • Assist clients with research publications.
  • Review and approve ethics applications.
  • Present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
  • Act as group coordinator for modules with multiple groups.
  • Handle large undergraduate classes.
  • Handle administrative tasks and take on leadership roles within the subject group. 
  •       Supervise honours students.
  • Communicate well in English (verbally and in writing). 
  • Assist clients with the planning of research projects.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Work independently, but also as a team.
  • Have good people skills.
  • Professional and ethical behaviour.
  • Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff.
