Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To appoint an academic in (Setswana/Isizulu) who is specially qualified in language and teaching in a multilingual environment (translanguaging), translation, and terminology development, especially for higher education context.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and Learning:
· Undergraduate facilitation in terms of lecturers’ development concerning multilingual language pedagogies (including translanguaging) according to the requirements of the subject group in terms of the identified flagship programme of the Faculty.
· Teaching activities in support of academics concerned with the identified flagship programme of the Faculty with regard to the requirements of the subject group or school, including sourcing and evaluating material on multilingual pedagogies.
· Language proficiency in two or more of the official NWU languages (Setswana and English, in the first instance in combination with English and/or /Isizulu) to function optimally in the teaching environment of the NWU.
· Support and contribute to faculty’s expertise in establishing terminologies and maintaining terminology databases, glossaries, dictionaries, and lexicons.
2. Research:
· Participation in research that will lead to publication outputs in accredited journals and contributions to national and international conferences concerning language pedagogy in a multilingual university.
· Support and contribute to the Faculty’s expertise as regards higher education pedagogies and methodologies.
· Facilitation and development of academics in the environment of the Faculty in the context of the modules associated with the flagship programmes of the Faculty.
3. Translation and Terminology development:
· Collaborate with faculties in the management of translation and terminology resources.
· Facilitation of the management, update and dissemination of the language information collected.
· Collaborate with Faculties in the management of quality and verification of terminology.
· Provide a consultative service to translators and interpreters concerning language-related matters.
4. Community engagement & academic scholarship:
· Involvement in the initiatives of the Subject Group.
· Membership of subject-specific societies provided that this extends to the focus on multilingual pedagogies.
· Liaise with external bodies/organisations/companies for 3rd income stream for Language Directorate and liaise with prospective clients and maintain existing clientele for Language Directorate.
5. Obtain a PhD:
· Select a PhD topic and register for PhD studies.
· Undertake PhD and complete studies within 4 years of appointment.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· A relevant MA degree (NQF Level 9) in African Languages or Translation or Linguistics or Terminology development or Language Practice.
EXPERIENCE:
· A minimum of 5 years’ teaching experience or assistance in teaching at the tertiary level.
· A minimum of 3 years’ research experience.
RECOMMENDATION:
· A PhD (NQF Level 10) in African Languages or Translation, or Linguistics, or Terminology development.
· MEd will be advantageous
· LSSA/ SAALT/SATI membership
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Advanced knowledge of general principles of language acquisition.
· Advanced knowledge of pedagogy associated with language learning, particularly about higher education.
· Facilitation and support of language learning.
· Participation in research activities associated with language pedagogy in the broad area of focus in the Faculty.
· Produce high-quality, accredited and peer-reviewed research outputs associated with multilingual pedagogies in higher education.
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Good interpersonal relationships
· Effective time management
· Good verbal and written communication skills.
· Demonstrate language proficiency to function optimally in the multilingual environment of the NWU.
· General administrative tasks related to teaching support and associated research.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
