Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Teaching farm mechanics, irrigation, and farm engineering modules. Also preparation of Study guides. Contribute towards the development of new curriculum and/or the review of the existing curriculum.
Undertake research activities (including on the field) and supervising students research projects in the discipline of irrigation systems/farm mechanics/agricultural engineering.
Build on existing and/or initiate strong relationship with communities (including farmers’ groups, science council etc) by providing advisory services or conducting research that project the image of the University.
Involved in management aspects related to an academic programme and/or research group.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning :
- Teaching farm mechanics, irrigation, and farm engineering modules.
- Preparation of Study guides.
- Contribute towards the development of new curriculum and/or the review of the existing curriculum.
Research:
- Undertake research activities (including on the field) and supervising students research projects in the discipline of irrigation systems/farm mechanics/agricultural engineering.
- Publish the findings of research work in accredited journals.
Administration and management:
- Involved in management aspects related to an academic programme and/or research group.
Community Engagement:
- Build on existing and/or initiate strong relationship with communities (including farmers’ groups, science council etc) by providing advisory services or conducting research that project the image of the University.
Minimum requirements
- A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Agricultural Engineering or Irrigation Systems or Water Resources or Farm Machinery.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- A PhD (NQF level 10) in Agricultural Engineering specializing in irrigation and conservation agriculture research.
- Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
- Professional membership with SACNASP.
- A minimum of one year of undergraduate teaching experience and post graduate supervision in Agricultural Engineering.
- A minimum of one year experience in academic administration and community engagement/involvement.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience of research (published papers).
- A minimum of three (3) years’ hands-on experience with motorized farm machinery and equipment for smallholder and commercial agriculture.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in agricultural engineering, irrigation, and agronomy. Experience in Crop Science will be recommendation.
- Supervision of undergraduate students.
- Research in agricultural engineering specifically in farm machinery, irrigation and operation of machinery and proven track records of published articles in accredited and high impact journals.
- Experience in the application of precision agriculture in agriculture engineering will be recommended.
- Strong ability to use Genstat/SAS software and any other relevant statistical software packages.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Demonstrate strong ability to attract research funding and supported by documentary evidence.
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Good inter-personal relationship.
