NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: NWU BUSINESS SCHOOL POSITION NUMBER: P002212 VACANCY: ALUMNI RELATIONS PRACTITIONER PEROMNES GRADE: 9 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The Alumni Relations Practitioner will be responsible for the NWU Business School Alumni Office; organising and supporting events and reunions. The Practitioner will handle the promotion of special events through social media, plan and develop projects and oversee the actual events; create a community for students after they have graduated and continue to build bonds. The Practitioner will also initiate collaborative events where alumni can contribute to Africanisation & Internationalisation aligned with NWU BS strategy.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Strategic Leadership.
  • Develop and implement an Alumni Strategy in consultation with the Chief Director of the NWU Business School.
  • Develop and implement a strategic action plan for a national and international alumni outreach program focused on PRME-Africa initiatives.
  • Develop a strategy to acknowledge high-performing alumni achievements.
  • Determine the NWU BS Alumni strategic direction and provide leadership, motivation, and support.
  • Develop a strong alumni and volunteer network. Identify key individuals to support and develop strategies for alumni relations activities and identify individuals who may assist in establishing chapters.
  • Work with lecturers who have frequent contact with national and international alumni.
  • Draw up a budget for the NWU BS Alumni Office in consultation with the Chief Director, monitor expenses and perform financial transactions on KFS related to Alumni.
 
2.    Alumni relationship building
  • Promote and encourage national and international loyalty amongst NWU Business School Alumni.
  • Meeting alumni at events and meetings and representing the NWU Business School in South Africa and abroad.
  • Networking with distinguished Alumni.
  • One-on-one meetings with alumni.
  • Attending various NWU Business School events.
  • Organise and promote sports events/days to be championed by alumni & friends of the NWU Business School.
  • Attend Think Tanks, Pitso's, and Road Shows with alumni/academics online and in person.
  • Encouraging alumni abroad to have regular reunions/get-togethers which will culminate into formal chapters.
  • Establish chapters and get them active.
  • Ensure that alumni abroad do not feel neglected.
 
3.    Stakeholder relationship
  • Ensure solid and productive relationships between the members, lecturers, and alumni.
  • Liaise with other Business Schools to ensure that the NWUBS Alumni relations program follows best practice.
  • Work with lecturers to facilitate alumni visits and to publicise NWU Business School's activities to alumni where possible.
  • Regular personalised contact with key alumni.
 
4.    Management
  • Manage the NWU BS Alumni office, coordinate events and monitor progress.
  • Oversee liaison between Alumni and the NWU Business School to ensure effective communication relating to alumni events, alumni group activities, publications, and web and email communication.
  • Develop a work plan in line with the strategy and Set targets and objectives for the NWU BS Alumni.
  • Manage and maintain the NWU BS Alumni records and ensure that the database is accurate and up to date to safeguard the integrity of the alumni database.
  • Manage the conducting of an NWU Business School alumni survey.

5.    Communication
  • Develop and implement a coordinated alumni communication program to support alumni engagement goals.
  • Draft a written communication responding to alumni with a high level of customer service.
  • Identify new ways to communicate and effectively reach specific NWU Business School alumni community segments.
  • Establish and build relationships with a wide range of alumni, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Maintain Alumni Relations on social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Twitter, Graduway, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Develop and execute a social media strategy (e.g., calendar for content updates, content suggestions, event promotions, etc.) for alumni relations using tools such as Facebook, Graduway, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
  • Contribute to newsletter content and highlight the achievements of influential alumni. Contribute to marketing opportunities related to alumni relations.
  • Maintain a relationship between the NWU BS Alumni and NWU official Alumni office.

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Communication or Management or related field (NQF7).
  • A minimum five (5) years’ experience working in an Alumni Office.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in Communication Management.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES/PREFERENCES:
  • An Honours degree in related field (NQF 8).
  • A Master’s degree in Communication/Management or related field.
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in the Higher Education sector.
  • Knowledge of the NWU systems will be beneficial.
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Graduway etc.
  • Knowledge of social media and content creation.
  • Project management skills will be beneficial.
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Building interpersonal relationships and the ability to work in a team.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
