Introduction
AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY AWAITS AT THE NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) WITHIN THE FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES AT THE CENTRE FOR HUMAN METABOLOMICS FOR A LECTURER VACANCY (POSITION NUMBER: P003206 GRADED AT PEROMNES A8). THE PURPOSE OF THE POSITION IS TO DEVELOP SOPHISTICATED METHODS FOR DIAGNOSTIC/RESEARCH PURPOSES AND/OR INTERPRETATION OF LABORATORY RESULTS AND/OR SAMPLE ANALYSIS. WORK-INTEGRATED RESEARCH AND TEACHING.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Teaching & Learning:
  • Participation in (learning) and contribution to (teaching) the academic program of the CHM.
  • Participation and contribution to the external accredited continuous professional development program of the CHM.
  • Participation and contribution to the work-integrated training program of the CHM including the development of procedures, review of training material and competency evaluation.
  • Student supervision (desirable)

Participation and contribution to the HPCSA accredited training program for medical scientists and chemical pathologists in the subspecialty of inherited metabolic diseases, once approved (program is currently under evaluation) Research:
  • Acts as project supervisor on contract research or biobank projects (project supervisor implies that the staff member is primarily responsible for a specific component of the project.
  • Assist in project planning, grant writing and ethics applications, with a focus on technical aspects
  • One publication per annum in an accredited journal.
Presents at a national/international conferences:
  • Innovation and 3rd stream incomeEnsures timeous and accurate reporting of diagnostic and/or contract research laboratory results AND/OR
  • Develop new diagnostic and research analytical methods AND/OR
  • Interpret diagnostic and/or research results
  • (All tasks to be performed according to quality requirements of the CHM)

Community engagement:
  • Participation in Rare-diseases South Africa or similar initiatives
  • Interacts with and share expertise with healthcare professionals and/or scientists in areas of metabolomics and inherited metabolic diseases.
Academic leadership:
  • Internal: Training of students and staff on technical aspects of highly specialized instrumentation and/or interpretation of diagnostic data.
  • Representation on national/international councils, societies, forums, working groups, advisory boards etc.
  • Research and/or travel awards, prizes and funding grants (desirable).
  • Transformation & DiversityIntegrated transformation: Teaching & outreach, inclusive research, community engagement and mentorship to promote broad transformation in the CHM

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A Master’s degree in Biochemistry or Chemistry or related field (NQF level 9).
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in hyphenated chromatography-mass spectrometry analytics AND/OR Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in the interpretation of routine diagnostics (Biochemistry and/or genetics).
  • HPCSA registrations as a medical scientist or portfolio of evidence ready to submit.

  • Project design, ethics, execution and write-up.
