Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To fill an existing vacant post (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer) to teach Life Sciences Education. The candidate is expected to make contributions to the teaching and research efforts of the institution, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional career relevant to the profession or discipline in terms of research and community engagement.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Learning:

  • Teaching undergraduate modules on contact and distance mode, etc. 
  • Teaching and supervision: Postgraduate
  • Study guide and study material development.

Research

  • Leading and participating in research national and international projects.
  • Initiating and planning of strategic research initiative.
  • Research Publications - articles, chapters and/or books.
  • Membership and participation in research entity activities.
  • NRF funded project management.

Community Engagement

  • Community service.
  • Initiate and manage community engagement projects

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD in Natural Sciences Education (NQF 10).
  • A bachelor’s (e.g. BSc.) degree in/with Natural Sciences (NQF 7).
  • A minimum of 3 years’ teaching and learning experience in school Life Sciences (Biology) (Grade 10 to 12) or university Life Sciences (Biology).

ADDED ADVANTAGE

  • Professional registration with SACE.

Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)

  • Advanced computer skills
  • Knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Life – and Natural Science.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to function in a multi-lingual working environment.

REMUNERATION

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
