PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Teaching and Research in the field of Igneous Petrology and related subjects within the School in the Geology-Soil Sciences Subject Group.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching
- Teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate level in Geology (igneous petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy, crystallography and related content).
- Assist in the development and teaching of the Sustainable Mining Programme.
Research
- Undertake research within the Unit for Environment Sciences and Management on issues of Geology and Soil Sciences
- Supervision of post-graduate students.
- Produce research output through international and national accredited articles and conference contributions.
- Fundraising for research.
Admin
- Administrative tasks including curriculum development.
Community Engagement
- Application of expertise in communities to address local identified issues of Geology.
Minimum requirements
- A MSc in Geology or related field (specialised in igneous petrology, mineralogy and/or ore geology) (NQF level 9).
- At least one to two years’ experience teaching undergraduate students.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- A PhD in Geology or related field (specialised in igneous petrology, mineralogy and/or ore geology) (NQF level 10).
- Professional registrations with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).
- A member of Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA).
- A minimum of one (1) year experience teaching and/or supervising postgraduate students.
- Relevant peer-reviewed publications in a reputable journal.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge in igneous petrology and geochemistry.
- Software skills including statistics.
- Good knowledge in mineralogy and crystallography.
- Fieldwork and mapping experience.
- Microscopy skills.
- Laboratory experience.
- Experience in geological modelling software.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
