Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
· Perform various biochemical analyses in various research projects according to good laboratory practice and standard operating procedures.
· General laboratory admin and day-to-day management (quotations, orders, stock-taking, logbooks, schedules, compiling standard operating procedures).
· Supervise and mentor students with regards to sample handling, preparation and storage in various research projects
· Regular maintenance and service of equipment (including troubleshooting)
· Promote and enforce health and safety guidelines (first aid, fire-fighting and radiation control)
· Data capturing and processing with specialised software while preserving data integrity
· Build and maintain relationships with application specialists and sales representatives to ensure maximum support
· Managing medical and chemical waste removal
· Assist in maintaining the biobank
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Laboratory analyses:
- Perform laboratory analyses in various research projects
- Maintain good quality control over results in various research projects
- Processing of results and data cleaning in various research projects
- Data capturing and processing with specialised software while preserving data integrity
2. Laboratory admin:
- Get quotations for general laboratory consumables and reagents needed in various research projects
- Receive orders and control against purchase orders
- Regular stock-taking of general laboratory consumables for various research projects
- Keep logbooks up to date
- Manage laboratory analyses schedule
- Compile standard operating procedures
- Medical and chemical waste removal
- Maintaining the biobank
3. Training and supervision of students:
- Train and supervise post graduate students and NRF interns in basic sample handling, preparation and storage
- Train and supervise post graduate students and NRF interns in basic laboratory analyses
- Promote and enforce health and safety guidelines (first aid, firefighting and radiation control)
4. Maintenance and service of equipment:
- Perform regular maintenance on equipment as required for each instrument
- Arrange regular service of equipment
- Build and maintain relationships with application specialists and sales representatives to ensure maximum support

Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· B.Sc in Biochemistry
· B.Sc Honours in Biochemistry
EXPERIENCE:
· 1 laboratory experience on the listed equipment in 4.4
· 1 year experience computer literacy: MS office and relevant equipment software including Belysa, Gen5 & SPSS
· 1 year experience day-to-day laboratory management
· 1 year experience training and mentoring of postgraduate students
RECOMMENDATION:
· M.Sc in Biochemistry
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· At least 1 years’ experience in working with the following equipment:
- Cobas Integra 400 plus (or similar automated analyser)
- Cobas e411 (or similar electrochemiluminescence analyser)
- Beckman Coulter AcT5 Diff (or similar haematology analyser)
- ELISA (or other plate-reader based assays)
- Luminex (or other multiplex based analyses)
- Computer literacy in MS Office and relevant equipment software
· Experience in maintaining laboratory equipment as well as implementing GLP
· Laboratory method optimization and troubleshooting
· Basic experience in managing a biological repository and other laboratory management-related tasks, such as quality assurance, training, and reagent and sample management
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Efficient communication with staff and students from different racial, economical and education level backgrounds (academic staff, students, support staff, technical staff, sales representatives, and suppliers of specialised equipment)
· Good human relations (must be able to work individually without supervision but also as part of a team)
· Good organising skills (filing etc.)
· The ability to learn new laboratory techniques
· Neat, systematic, accurate, attention to detail, responsible, trustworthy, critical, organised, dedicated
· Effective time management
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
