Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Responsible for the acquiring, processing and preservation of NWU photographic and other digital material of archival value. Responsible for the maintenance of the RAM department’s internet page and social media platforms.
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
LIASON AND EVENTS
- Responsible for identifying events that have historical value for the NWU and reach out to the possible sources for the photos and other digital material.
- Assist with planning and execution of archives day and museum day and other events to market the RAM departments activities and services
CLIENT SERVICES
- Assist with providing reference services to staff, students and researchers by attending to queries and requests for archival records in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure.
SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET
- Responsible for maintaining the RAM department’s internet web page and social media i.e. Facebook and Instagram.
AD HOC
- Responsible for any other tasks as assigned by the HOD or Archivist
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Diploma or Advanced Certificate relating to Archives and Records (NQF 6)
- A minimum of 2 years’ work experience in acquiring, processing and preserving photos and other digital material.
- A minimum of 2 years’ work experience in digitisation.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Experience in photography.
- A minimum of 2 years’ work experience in client services, digital archives, databases and indexing.
- SASA membership.
Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
- Knowledge of archival and preservation concepts, methodologies and techniques.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of the processing and preservation of photos and other digital material.
- Ability to develop and maintain finding aids using contemporary tools in accordance with national standards.
- Management of back-up systems and understanding of copyright issues in a digital environment.
- Knowledge of legislation, digital management.
- Knowledge of research methodology and skill in providing research assistance.
- Proper oral and written communication skills in Afrikaans and English.
- Computer literacy: Skill in the use of computer with Windows-based operating environment, Adobe Photoshop and understanding of database and software management.

- Should be able to communicate and foster a cooperative work environment effectively.
- Should be able to work independently with self-initiative and minimal supervision, flexibility and service orientation.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate successfully with NWU staff and, students regarding transfers.
- Strong interpersonal skills to engage with external stakeholders, i.e. researchers.
- Organisational skills: the ability to plan, coordinate projects effectively, achieve objectives and meet a variety of competing demands and deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills to supervise scanning assistants as required
