Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The subject group History of Art in the School of Communication at the NWU Potchefstroom campus seeks to appoint one new member of staff (Lecturer) to assume teaching and research responsibilities. Candidates with an academic background and research experience in history of art, visual art and culture, and related disciplines are invited to apply.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching:
  • Teach introductory and advanced level courses to a diverse student body.
  • Bring enthusiasm and strong pedagogy to teaching; engage in a practical, hands-on program of teaching; and provide strong mentoring to students.
  • Provide curricular leadership in the history of art program.
  • Engage in Scholarly and subject related case studies.
  • Provide service to the Community.
  • Advise students.
 
Curriculum development:
  • Contribute to curricular revision to reflect the latest trends in the field and to build and expand the History of Art subject group.

Scholarly work:
  •  Publication record and clear evidence of agenda for continued research in the field of History of Art and Visual Studies.
  • Contribution to the academic citizenship and development of the subject group.
  • Development of the research niche ViNCO.
  • Participation in research projects with colleagues.

Study guidance:
  • Provide study guidance to graduate students on Honours, Masters and preferably PhD levels.
  • Proven record of study guidance.
 
And other tasks:
  • Responsible for all administrative tasks with regards to the above.
  •  Study guide development and update.
  •  Student marks and assessment.
  •  Share responsibility for committee and department assignments as required.
  •  Participate in services related to the life of the school and community.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  •   A MA in History of Art/Visual Studies or related (NQF 9)
  •   A minimum of 3 years’ experience in teaching and supervising and study supervision for postgraduate students.
  •   Knowledgeable in and has clear evidence of a research agenda/ proven publication record.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
  •   A PhD in History of Art/Visual Studies or related (NQF 10)
  •   Registered and a member of SAVAH, SAJAH, or any other applicable scholarly association.     

FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
  •   Functional knowledge within higher education
  •   Functional knowledge within industry related environments
  • Sound understanding of the broad History of Arts and Visual Culture discipline

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
  •   Collegiality toward fellow lecturers
  •   Sound relations with colleagues
  •   Able to work independently
  •   Ethical principles and academic integrity
  •   Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in multilingual environments
