Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of this position is to provide an expert research support service to postgraduate students and researchers; to develop a data management program; to liaise with relevant role players regarding scholarly communication, research output and the institutional repository; to provide research specific training; to develop a program for young researchers; to manage the research commons as dedicated space conducive for research.

This position will also be responsible for the technical assistance/design and development of research information services including RDM and Digital Humanities. To play a significant/valuable role identifying and presenting special collections. Moreover, this position will provide a general and subject-specific information service to library users, including in-depth assistance to postgraduate students, researchers, and academic staff; and to identify and recommend relevant information sources for acquisition in collaboration with academic staff to support research, and research-based teaching and learning.

JOB SPECIFICATION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Basic and Advanced data and information literacy training to students, researchers and academic staff
  • Research Data Management
  • Communication of research output
  • Research support services to the researchers
  • Research partner in the research lifecycle
  • Development of a program for young researchers
  • Management of Research & Honours Commons
  • Open Access Agreements administration (e.g Transformative Agreements)
  • Provide general and advanced Information services to students, postgraduate students, researchers and academic staff
  • Create and maintain Libguides
  • Liaison with academic staff and researchers
  • Administrative duties
  • Collection development (print and electronic)

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A B.Bibl., B.Inf. or a Bachelor’s degree in Information Sciences on NQF 7 (or any Bachelor’s degree on NQF 7 a Postgraduate degree in Library and/or Information Sciences on NQF 8 or higher)
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in library Information Service and Research Support service

RECOMMENDATION
  • A postgraduate qualification in Library and/or Information Science.
  • Experience in research support to academic users on different levels.

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES
  • Advanced knowledge of Open Access movement and open access publishing platforms such as Institutional Repositories, Data Repositories, encoding standards (eg. XML) and metadata
  • Advanced knowledge of Copyright Legislation
  • Knowledge of Data Curation and Management - Research Data Management
  • Good knowledge of Institutional Repositories
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the application and advantages of bibliometric tools - bibliometrics and altmetrics theory and practice
  • Proficiency in providing advanced research training to postgraduates and researchers
  • Good understanding of scholarly output communication
  • Proficiency in developing programs for young researchers (workshops, webinars etc.)
  • Management of Research & Honours Commons
  • Research tools
 
OTHER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
  • Advanced Knowledge of and insight into research practices and workflow as well as scholarly communication - demonstrated experience in the planning, implementation and reporting of information, research or data management projects or services - report writing
  • The ability to liaise with assigned academic departments/schools on all library matters
  • Knowledge of reference management tools (e.g., EndNote) and Referencing methods
  • Insight into the research needs of postgraduates
  • High level of computer literacy with sound knowledge of MS Office, Outlook and web technology
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong inclination towards client services
  • Good judgement and creative approach to solving problems
