Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Interpretation of genetic and biochemical results of patients suspected to suffer from rare diseases.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational activities

·        Performance of analysis, involvement in sample reception, logging, analysis, quality assurance and reporting.

Result interpretation

·        Interpret and report results and take appropriate action.

 

Method development, validation, quality assurance and accreditation

·        Participate in the quality assurance process as outlined in ISO 15189.

 

General laboratory maintenance

·        Ensure that laboratory equipment is at all times maintained.

·        Effective and efficient inventory management

 

Continuous professional development and registration

·        Appropriate to retain registration as medical scientist

Ad hoc tasks

·        As directed by Manager

Academic support

·        The support of academic staff or students as per instruction by manager.

Minimum requirements

·        A Master’s degree in Biochemistry / Molecular biology / genetics or related field.

·        A minimum of 3 years’ laboratory analysis experience.

·        HPCSA registration as a Medical Biological Scientist in the category Genetics or portfolio of evidence ready to submit.

·        All candidates that have been registered with the HPCSA in the last 5 years must submit their HPCSA portfolio of evidence with the application

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·        Good laboratory practise, laboratory safety, quality assurance and accreditation.

·        Project design, ethics, execution and write-up.

·        Laboratory management and laboratory information systems

·        Laboratory processes, sample analysis and post-analytical processing, including bioinformatics

·        Proficiency in several molecular and/or genetic methods including triage and interpretation of results

·        Dr and Clinician liaison.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

·        Ability to function as part of a scientific team is essential.

·        Excellent time management and planning skills.

·        Excellent communication skills.

·        Attentive to detail.

·        Ability to function under high-stress situations.

·        Ability to work in a multi-linguistic and multi-cultural environment.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
