PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the position is to coordinate, manage and support Sanger Sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing activities in the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
· Generate and analyse Sanger Sequencing and NGS data
· Analyse data to contribute towards peer reviewed publications and conference proceedings
· Supervise and co-supervise students
· Participate in grant applications
2. TEACHING, LEARNING AND TRAINING
· Delivery of lectures in the two new Advanced Molecular Biology as well as the Bioinformatics Modules in the School for Biological Sciences B.Sc. Hons program.
· Training of UESM and other students in principles of Sanger Sequencing and NGS
· Providing hands-on training for postgraduate students to generate sequencing and NGS data
· Initiation of new course materials
3. MAINTAINANCE OF EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES
· Budget and arrange for Maintenance of:
- General molecular biology equipment,
- Sanger Sequencing equipment
- Next Generation Sequencing equipment (MiSeq, Minion or other)
- Computer facilities
4. MANAGEMENT OF SEQUENCING ACCOUNT
· Financial management of the Sequencing account.
· Preparing quotations and Issue of invoices
· Reconciling internal and external customer accounts
· Managing and ordering of all consumables
5. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
· Participate in educating the general and scientific community about sequencing
6. AD HOC
· Perform ad hoc assignment as instructed by the Director
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Excellent computer skills – MS Office
· Ability to prioritise ongoing administrative tasks and manage own time well.
· Good organisational skills
· Excellent problem solving skills
· Knowledge of Sanger and Next Generation sequencing procedures and terminology
· Ability to prepare sequencing reactions independently, using standardized workflows
· Ability to evaluate sequencing data and to perform quality control independently
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Ability to prioritise all ongoing tasks
· Time management skills
· Ability to utilize various software programs and tools to address queries with regards to sequencing data and financial management of the sequencing facility.
· Ability to function in a team environment
Minimum requirements
· BSc Honours in Biological Science
· Formal training in QiiME
· 1-year experience in Sanger Sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing
· Experience in language programming such as R or Python
