The incumbent will be responsible for creating metadata (bibliographic records) representing acquired information resources and thus providing information such as creator names, titles and subject terms that describe resources to enable users (students, researchers, lecturers and staff members) to have access to all sources of information that the Library possesses on a particular topic, by a particular author or in a particular format.
Job description
· Cataloguing and classification of information resources according to international standards
· Classification of information resources according to international standards.
· Provide subject heading
· Adding Library holdings to WorldCat to support interlibrary loans
· Formulation of different types of access points according to international standard
· Verify authority records in the library catalogue and add new authority records from WorldCat if not available
· Update existing authority records
· Liaison with departmental head and fellow cataloguers
· Report on work outputs to departmental and division head.
· Ad hoc tasks as determined by division head.
Minimum requirements
· B. Lib, B. Inf, or B degree plus postgraduate qualification in Library and / or Information Science.
· 3 years relevant library experience
· Membership to LIASA
Other competency requirements
· In depth knowledge of Resources Description Access (RDA) and Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2)
· Assigning Subject Headings according to the Library of Congress Subject Headings list (LCSH)
· Classification of information resources according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
· Knowledge of electronic bibliographic tools
· Computer skills and knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, GroupWise and internet
· Ability to work independently and with little guidance
· Accuracy
· Good interpersonal skills and ability to function in a team
· Ability to work under pressure
· Knowledge of the cataloguing module of a library system
