PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To maintain the Physics and Electronics laboratories and assist academic staff and students in the preparation and running of practical. To design, manufacture and repair scientific and educational instruments and apparatus of the University.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist in the fabrication and repair of electronics and physics research equipment.
• Assist in all electronics laboratory setups from undergraduate to honours (4 levels).
• Assist in the repair and fabrication of postgraduate MSc and PhD experimental research equipment.
• Assist in the ordering of laboratory equipment and consumables for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Prepare and run mini-workshops on connections and safety measures.
Minimum requirements
Qualification
· B-Tech or equivalent in Instrumental or Mechatronics or related is desirable.
· National Diploma or Certificate in Electronics/Applied Physics/ Mechatronics or related is essential.
· Advanced Diploma in Electronics or Mechatronics or related is desirable.
Experience/s
· 3 years’ experience in working in a Physical/Electronics laboratory is desirable.
· 3 years technical experience in design and repair of research equipment or other technical equipment.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· The ability to use scientific methods for measurement.
· The ability to maintain basic safety rules in a laboratory.
· Knowledge of health and safety practices and precautions applicable to a laboratory.
· Knowledge of scientific procedures and techniques used in a Physics/Electronics laboratory.
· Computer literacy in Internet, Email and MS Office (Word, Excel, Power point).
· Essential hand tool skills and knowledge.
· Understanding of technical drawings and wiring diagrams. (CAD experience will be an advantage.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· The ability to function under pressure and apply good time management.
· Ability to function as part of a team and also in a multicultural environment.
· Good communication skills.
· Willing to learn new skills fast.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
