PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The new Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) position at lecturer level will be part of the academic staff at the IKS Centre and will teach modules in the Bachelor of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (BIKS) programme. Indigenous Knowledge Systems is a multidisciplinary, cross cutting pillar and the BIKS at NWU has four (04) main stream which includes: Indigenous Science, Technology, Innovation, Indigenous Health, Indigenous Agriculture, Indigenous Arts and Culture. However, in this case the lecturer will be responsible to teach modules especially in the Indigenous Science, Technology and Innovation Stream. The individual will register for a doctoral programme as soon as possible, conduct research in IKS and publish the results in accredited journals. It is expected that the individual will participate in community engagement and implementation of expertise.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaching of modules in indigenous knowledge systems
- Doctoral study / research in indigenous knowledge systems
- Community engagement in indigenous knowledge systems
- Participation in development activities as part of the SSAU-Development Programme (SSAU-DP)
Minimum requirements
- A Master’s degree specializing in Indigenous knowledge systems is essential
- Applicants’ academic average of 70 % is essential (Please attach proof of results in your application)
- Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age
EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year experience teaching in indigenous knowledge systems is essential
- 1 year experience in research development and management is essential
- 1 year community engagement experience is essential
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS):
- Ability to develop study materials, teach modules in Indigenous Knowledge Systems using indigenous pedagogies
- Ability to engage with the holders / practitioners and communities in indigenous knowledge systems
- Knowledge, skills, competencies of indigenous research methodologies, cosmologies, ontologies, philosophies, epistemologies and worldviews
- Effective communication, computer skills suitable for teaching, community engagement and research dissemination
- Ability to design, execute and publish research findings in indigenous knowledge systems
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to work in a team, ability to work under pressure
- Leadership skills, tolerance, innovative, creative, flexible, effective, punctual
- Ability to work and engage with the indigenous communities, indigenous knowledge holders and practitioners
- Ability to resolve conflict, build peace, interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
