Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR), as a National Research entity hosted by the North-West University. SADiLaR is a national research infrastructure supporting the development and distribution of language resources and development of Digital Humanities in South Africa. The position of communication officer has the following purposes:
  • To assist the communication manager to drive the communication strategy and reaching communication goals
  • To drive the social media campaigns of the Centre and providing feedback on social media analytics to measure success of campaigns
  • To fulfil all communications requirements for both internal and external stakeholders, with a strong focus on social media campaigns, social media analytics, blog writing, drive the internal newsletter of the SADiLaR hub, technical assistance on the website as well as general administrative duties

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • An appropriate diploma or degree in journalism or communication

EXPERIENCE:
  • At least three years in the field of communication, marketing, journalism or public relations experience in higher education or research, preferably in digital humanities
  • 3 – 5 years relevant experience in a wide variety of facets of communication, including media liaison, corporate identity management, commercialisation, events management, liaison with external interest groups
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience in Web-page development and maintenance, design of marketing material, newsletters, and the creation and management of corporate branding
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience of Creation and management of an online presence (including social networking) for business purposes
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience with graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Dream Weaver, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • 1 year experience Multilingual – the ability to write and understand more than one African language

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Knowledge of computer linguistics or digital humanities
·         Advanced computer literacy, with specific reference to MS Windows, Office and Adobe
·         The ability to learn other applications (quick mastering of a variety of applications used in language technology, and specifically within SADiLaR, is a requirement)
·         Skilled in web-page design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
·         Sound administrative and organisation skills and the ability to function effectively under pressure and to meet pre-set deadlines
·         Knowledge and understanding of public communications, public relations, and marketing guidelines
·         A valid driver's license.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·         The ability to work as part of a team and adapt to the work method of the team, as well as to work independently
·         The ability to prioritise, manage and complete several tasks simultaneously
·         Good communication skills and presentation abilities as well as interpersonal relations, and a positive client-service orientation
·         Creative problem-solving abilities
·         Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    Administration:
  • Staff-based administration, events management, project involvement (as project member), and contribute to strategic planning (problem-solving & strategy implementation)
2.    Social media and web content:
  • Setting up social media campaigns that form part of communication strategy, announcements, writing of new open call projects of SADiLaR, electronic communication (web and blog writing). Element production related to product development (graphics, manuals etc.)
3.    Internal Communication:
  • Contribute to Internal communication initiatives: (newsletters, announcements, running SADiLaR’s events calendar. Involvement with coordinating SADiLaR events and activities) Maintenance of the corporate identity of SADiLaR (templates, lay-outs, décor, branding)
4.    External Communication:
  • Contribute to external communication activities with external groups (maintaining relations with collaborators, stakeholders, and media groups). Writing press releases, planning for media briefings, and responding to external enquiries
 
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
