NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICAL SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: P001052 VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The successful candidate will be responsible for lecturing undergraduate and/or postgraduate statistics modules, and can also be expected to be involved in the development of new modules. Other duties include the supervision of postgraduate students, and performing statistical consultations where one supports staff members, post-doctorate and postgraduate students or external entities with the planning, design and statistical analyses of their research projects.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
1.      TEACHING AND LEARNING
·       Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate modules
·       Be involved in the development of new modules
 
2.      RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
·       Mentoring and supervision of postgraduate students
·       Conducting collaborative research and publishing research outputs in accredited journals
 
3.      MONEY STREAM 3
·       Participate in money stream 3 endeavours such as the presentation of short courses
·       Performing statistical consultations
 
4.      COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
·       Participate in Statistics outreach activities and service to the Statistics community

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Expertise in statistical computer packages – SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA
·         Ability to supervise postgraduate students
·         Ability to handle large undergraduate classes
·         Good organisational skills
·         Excellent problem solving skills
·         Excellent communication skills (English – verbally and in writing)
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·         The ability to function effectively under pressure and as part of a team
·         Good interpersonal relations, and positive client-service orientation
·         Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU

Minimum requirements

·       PhD in Mathematical Statistics or equivalent
·       3 years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses
·       Proven research track record – at least two publications in accredited journals
·       Experience in postgraduate supervision – desirable
·       SASA membership – desirable
