PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
An appointment of a Lecturer to contribute meaningfully to ensure quality teaching and learning. To support the development of critical thinking of staff and students in the school and faculty by increasing capacity in handling political science discourses and issues associated with curricula. To introduce students to politics, international relations, peace and conflict studies, research and provide practical training in peacebuilding and peace-making as well as problem solving, essay writing and advocacy. To nurture students who will contribute positively to society by advancing specialized knowledge and paving a way to a better future.
Job description

Teaching & administering of examination of allocated modules
- Research & Innovation
To be able to publish Journal articles in DHET accredited journals
- Community Engagement
Effective participation in community development projects.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of current developments in Political Science and International Relations. Specialisation in Peace and Conflict Studies would be an added advantage.
- A high level of computer literacy, with the ability to use various Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU (knowledge of an indigenous African language would be an advantage).
- At least two years’ experience in a higher education, academic and research environment, including two-publication records and supervision of honours students. Supervision of master’s students would serve as an advantage.
- A record of near completion of PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies/ Political Science would be an added advantage.
- Involvement in community engagement initiatives would be a requirement
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Publishing research articles and conference papers
- Teaching of honours and undergraduate students. Supervising honours research projects
- Marketing the department in terms of recruiting students and maintaining relations with local stakeholders
- At least two years’ experience in an higher academic and research environment, including two publication record and supervision of honours and master’s degree students
- Community engagement and general academic administration
Minimum requirements
- Master’s degree NQF level 9 in Political Studies, International Relations or Peace or Conflict Studies is essential.
- Member with SAAPS is desirable
EXPERIENCE
- 2 years functional experience in teaching and learning is essential
- 2 years research experience is essential
- 1 years community involvement is essential
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
