NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (VANDERBIJLPARK CAMPUS) DIVISION: NWU FINANCES AND FACILITIES DEPARTMENT: PROTECTION SERVICES VACANCY: CONTROL OFFICER (PRIORITY INCIDENT INVESTIGATOR) PEROMNES NUMBER: 11 POSITION NUMBER: V002736 PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Priority Incident Investigator must have knowledge and expertise in, among other things, the NWU policies, guidelines, protocols and procedures; insight of the institutional culture and environment; know how to conduct a fair and equitable investigation; and understand the effects of trauma on parties impacted by sexual, gender and common law misconduct. The Control Officer: Priority Incident Investigator will also conduct awareness campaigns and prevention programmes.
Job description

Visit crime scenes
•       Prevent contamination of incident scenes.
•       Preserve the incident scene.
•       Cordon-off incident scene.
•       Identify and record exhibits on the incident scene.
 
   Priority and incident investigation
•       Obtain statements from the complainant and respondent(s).
•       Obtain statements from witness(es).
 
   Offer psychosocial support to victims/survivors
•       Offer support for the psychological and social consequences of trauma, e.g., trauma debriefing; accompany survivor to SAPS if s/he elects to open a criminal case; and to accompany her / him to the court to apply for a protection order.
 
    Adopt a multifaceted approach to the prevention of sexual and gender related misconduct
•       Conduct social mobilisation activities and campaigns intended to promote safety on and off campus and in the prevention of sexual and gender related misconduct.
•       Conduct campaigns to educate and inform the campus community about policies and guidelines.
 
   Compilation of accurate incident and investigation reports
•       Submit a report as soon as the incident is reported to the Senior Manager, Protection Services.
•       Submit an investigation report with findings to the Manager, SJS.
 
   Management of information
•  Submit a monthly report to the Senior Manager, ITO.
•  Number of cases received.
•  Detection rate.
•  Cases withdrawn.
•  Dockets to SJS and ER.
•  Disposal rate.

Minimum requirements

·       National Diploma/Advanced Certificate in incident investigation or equivalent (NQF6).
·       Three years’ experience in conducting investigations.
·       Valid driver’s license.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERANCES:
·       PSIRA registered is desirable.
·       Investigation course: Sexual offences.
 
 
FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS):
·       Computer literacy (Advanced).
·       Verbal communication.
·       Written communication including compiling concise and coherent incident reports.
·       Conflict Management skills.
·       Analytical Skills.
·       Knowledge of relevant legislation (Equity Act, Domestic Violence Act, Harassment Act, Sexual Offences Act).
