Job description
1. Hydrogen Technologies
NWU and the Faculty of Engineering, through its DSI HySA Infrastructure Centre of Competence, are looking for qualified candidates to apply for postdoctoral positions. Each position is initially for one year with a possibility to extend further. Standard NWU fellowship will be offered with an option to receive a maximum of income as determined by SARS for each year.
We are seeking highly motivated post-doctoral researchers to support the development of WE (Water Electrolysis) components, characterization as well as related modelling activities. The positions will involve the application of electrochemical characterization methods, ab-initio computational modelling techniques for hydrogen technologies as well as performance and durability testing. Some key responsibilities, but not limited to, will include CCMs and GDLs preparation and characterization, use of EIS, data analysis, presentation, and publication of results.
Requirements & skills:
- Ph.D. in chemistry, electrochemistry, or engineering sciences.
- Hands-on expertise in PEM technology and ab-initio computational modelling techniques.
- Record of publications
- Excellent communications skills and team work ability.
2. DST/NRF Research Chair in Biofuels and Other Clean Alternative Fuels
A post-doctoral fellow position is available in the DST/NRF Research Chair in Biofuels and Other Clean Alternative Fuels for participation is several projects in the hydrothermal liquefaction research field. Applicants should have a PhD in chemical engineering or another suitable related field and have a track record of publication in the field of either hydrothermal liquefaction or pyrolysis. Candidates with a sound knowledge and understanding of lignin will be prioritised.
3. Additive manufacturing of metal alloys
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research fellow to conduct research in additive manufacturing of metal alloys. The prospective candidate must be able to independent conduct research, document, and publish the results in peer-reviewed literature and also carry out other tasks as delegated. The candidate should be knowledgeable or have sufficient experience in the following:
- Advanced manufacturing (i.e., additive manufacturing)
- Numerical simulations materials synthesis and characterization.

- Relevant PhD degree obtained within five years before the appointment as a postdoctoral fellow.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
